Grab scraps of steel from somewhere and practice on them. It helps if you have a Hilux obsessed mate called Scottie who's been welding since the beginning of time to help guide you, but it's probably not strictly necessary.

I don't remember my pump having instructions either. It was a facet pump, so maybe it did and I just did the typical bloke thing and ignored everything in the box but the pump...

Thinking about it, your solution would have the added benefit of saving your engine if you crack your oil pan or kill your oil pump. It's a pretty good idea.

Sounds to me as if the thermostat is stuck open, or it's opening at too low of a temperature. For example, if it opens at 30 degrees C, it'll look like it works correctly because it'll be closed when you fit it, and it'll open if you dip it in hot water. That's typical of a bad thermostat. It should be closed until the engine reaches temp, then it should open. The whole point of them is to bring the engine to temp quickly, and close again if the engine gets too cold (i.e. keep the engine at the correct temp). I ran my SJ for a while without a thermo...
