SJ Transfer Case Poly Shifter Sheet Best Place To Buy In UK?

Post by SherwoodNash » Sun Jun 26, 2016 8:36 pm

I'm renewing all my SJ's tranny fluids in one go. I've been prepping for the job by freeing up all the bolts beforehand.

Of course the transfer case fill plug is locked solid, tried WD40 overnight, blow torch, hammer and chisel, candle wax trick. Only way off now would be to weld a bolt on but have no means to do this.

So looks like a thru the top fill, and I thought whilst the lever's out, may as well replace the shifter bushing/sheet. I haven't dismantled anything yet, still doing research.

The sheet maybe OK but after 30 years and me poking around thought I'd replace anyway.

Seems like poly is the material of choice, all I can find in the UK is this Nylon one from Jimmy's Bits.

Anyone bought this same one? does it have the notches so that it can swivel into place? can't tell from the pic on their website?

I'll probably go for this one, but does anyone know of any other UK source for these parts?

Thanks!

Hi, it so strange I literally just received a new one from jimnybits yesterday as my one went. The one I received looks exactly as pictured above if that helps.

Great, does it have these notches underneath then, like I mentioned?

If not, how do you fit past and under the internal pins?

Ta!

Here's a useful set of instructions if you need them, on pdf.

Just drop the transfer box out, it's easy enough to do so!

My Gearbox fill plug rounded off, but a friend who has a proper set of drain keys and it undone, whilst off he welded a 17mm bolt on to it.

Had to do the same to my rear diff yesterday!

It's strange as the one I got doesn't have the indent but it is exactly the same as the one I pulled out. Not sure if the year changes anything but I have a 84 sj410. The new one was really stiff and couldn't bend so I heated it up in boiling water for a second or two and it went in no problem.

The only reason I change the bushing was because it got stuck in neutral, however, the old bishing doesn't look warn. I'll post a pic to show you what I mean.

Oh, that'll be great, I'd like to see that, thanks Palo

I did end up ordering the green nylon one first thing today, did you change yours in situ or with the TC out on the bench?

I'd prefer to take mine out, but I'd have the potential of rounding off 16 bolts, when not essential!

Another hour of work and success :doublethumbs: the ******* fill plug broke free, what a feeling! very nearly bought my first mig welder yesterday too.

Hot air gun for 5 minutes worked better than the blow torch in the end.

So I'll leave the shift sheet ring job for another day and time.

The most weird thing is, all the fluids are at correct level and pure golden color, so must have been changed last service by previous owner.

And I thought mine looked bad!

Glad you got it off though, my transfer box fluid was golden, the rest was like a black hole!

What plug are you putting back in.... surely not the one you've taken out?
