LOW GEARS

Can i select 4 wheel drive and use my sj413 with the front wheels unlocked without doing any damage.....hopefully no wind-up on the transmission system.....always wondered about this

Ah, you mean 4 wheel drive low ratio. I have gone into 4-low with the front hubs unlocked a handful of times, but only for pulling the trailer up the ramp on the back drive as it's a 60% grade and pretty narrow so I want more control. I wouldn't do it for any real distance (more than, say, two dozen yards); plus, the SJ is pretty low geared anyway. I've found that even in the likes of the Lincolnshire Wolds or the Yorkshire Moors the most I've ever really had to do is not go into 4th and be quick about my gear changes.

You can mod the box/stick to get 2wd low I beleive there's a guide on here...

Ive heard that you can damage the hubs by driving them when they are unlocked

I have heard this too but not encountered any problems. I figured I can probably get away with doing a whole ten/fifteen yards in a straight line at a maximum speed of 2 miles an hour.

Wouldn't do anything more than that though. The only reason I do is the SJ drops down the back drive easy as pie whereas the Lawn Mower only has about an inch of leeway; the Discovery is the one that actually tows the trailer, I just use the SJ to maneuver it.

Ye I was thinking this question back along when I went for a dip in the river and the back wheels was just spinning and my hubs was in free and I only had trainers on so I decided to put it in 4L with hubs in free and I managed to get out lol

I always did rivers in 4 with hubs locked, can get a bit scary when the back end floats

Jimny 1.6 not as good as an SJ but still good

If you need to tow something heavy a reasonable distance in low ratio I would maybe consider disconnecting the front prop
